The Roots: California to Minnesota

I grew up in the heart of San Jose, California, before eventually finding my way to Minnesota. California wasn't just where I lived; it was the blueprint for how I see the world. The people, the sprawling landscapes, and—let’s be real—the food have all left a permanent mark on my creative DNA.
Culture & Community
As a Portuguese-American, I was lucky enough to grow up immersed in Little Portugal in San Jose. Our culture is built on three pillars: Food, Music, and Community. Music was a family affair. My father was the conductor for our Portuguese band, and while I never quite mastered reading sheet music (hindsight is 20/20!), I found my rhythm in the noise. I just wanted to drum. I’d follow the snare line by ear or go ham on the cabasa—there’s a certain magic in just "feeling" the beat rather than reading it.
Adventure & Discovery
We weren’t rich, but we were never short on adventure. My mother had a way of turning simple days into explorations. She’d take us to Art and Wine festivals where I’d spend hours watching artists work. Seeing someone light up while explaining their process sparked a realization in me: everyone has a creative spark; it just needs to be let out.
Street Influence & The Process
The highways and railroads of California were my first galleries. I’d stare at the graffiti on housing dividers and trains for hours, wondering which city a tag came from or hoping an artist got home safe if a piece looked unfinished.
When I started getting out there myself, I gravitated toward stencils—they were quick, sharp, and fit my style better than traditional throw-ups. That appreciation for the "streets" eventually evolved into a deep love for physical media and tattooing.
